Mitcham Carnival 2009

The 13th of June 2009, Saturday, marked a great success for the Filipino-British community in Mitcham, Surrey. We joined the Mitcham Filipino-British Association on their first participation at the Mitcham Carnival which was attended by the diverse community that lived in the area.

The theme of this year's carnival was "The Pride of Mitcham".

A parade kicked off at Figges Marsh, which went through to the high street, and ended at the Three Kings Piece, Commonside West, Mitcham.

The Mitcham Filipino-British Association (MFBA), or Mitcham Pinoy, is an independent community-based association for Filipino residents in Mitcham. They aim to promote unity of the Filipino community and to preserve the tradition and culture of the Philippines whilst remaining to adopt the British way of life. The organisation was formed in December 2008.

We joined the parade along with Mitcham Pinoy, showcasing the Filipino martial art of Eskrima. There was also a float with us, featuring one of the beautiful Filipiniana attires of the country.

We also met the Mayor of Mitcham, who saw every community present at the event/parade. Various communities performed for the Mayor, of which he selected his favourite. The winning group was awarded a trophy.

Mitcham Pinoy's new website was also launched at the Carnival: www.mitchampinoy.com

The day was summery hot and everyone had fun. It was a beautiful day and we are looking to team up with Mitcham Pinoy again next year, this time aiming for the massive shiny cup!
