25 July 2009, Saturday, Asia House. Philippine Generations organised a free cultural workshop for kids and adults alike, where everyone can learn Filipino dance (taught by Lahing Kayumanggi), Filipino martial arts (taught by Doce Pares) and Drama (by Filipino team D.R.A.M.A). The event was also graced by the SOAS SEA Music group where they performed some South East Asian beats using the kulintang and other South East Asian instruments.
We had two sessions where we first taught a mix of kids and adults. Instructor Alex explained the history of the art and how it has become one of the main influences that has shaped the Philippines today. At the second session, we had more adults, including the Philippine Generation team. We all had a great laugh while learning the beautiful art of eskrima.
We showcased different aspects of the art such as single stick, double stick, espada y daga, knife defense, mano-mano and sayaw (forms).
We thank everyone who participated at the event and we hope that you have learned some new things about Filipino culture's martial arts, dance and drama.
