25th November, Wednesday, 8pm. Kuya Sonny Laragan rang Alex via landline to check if the line was clear. Everything was good.
We were told that he's gonna ring back anytime from 9pm to 10pm.
First interview was from a Filipina based in Paris. The second interview was from a Filipina based in Stuttgart. The conversations were quite entertaining.
Then some music played and our cordless Binatone phone rang. Drriing!
Alex, half asleep, scampers and finds the handset. It won't pickup. It gives out this error message and we can't answer the call. We panicked and tried all sorts of things with the handset and the receiver. No hope.
Diana then realised, why don't we call him? It seemed that we could do outgoing calls. We rang him, he put us on hold and we had 4 minutes to go.
When the music playing was almost done, our lights gradually dimmed and pffttt! BROWNOUT! (Or in British terms, Blackout).
It just wasn't our night. It seemed like the interview would never happen. The electricity went down, including our phone connection to Kuya Sonny, and even the Internet connection which we needed to listen to the broadcast went off.
We looked out to the streets and it was pitch black apart from the cars driving past. We were panicking, almost hopeless, as we were very excited about this interview.
A couple of minutes later, the lights came back on. Then the phone came back on. We rang Kuya Sonny. And we were instantly On Air!
We chatted for a couple of minutes about the 'brownout' and many other things. We started talking about Eskrima and Doce Pares.
Then Silence.
Our old and barely-used Binatone phone went dead. We kept on ringing back, but everytime we got connected, a couple of minutes later, it went off.
We were so frustrated. Then Diana again realised, why don't we use the mobile fone. We get free calls to landlines anyway. And viola! Since then we had a good half an hour of talking and sharing to the audience about the beautiful art of Eskrima.
Then it was time to close the conversation. We said our goodbyes and put the phone down.
You won't believe the relief and the amount of giggling we had after that.
Special thanks to Leilani, Abner and bro Kirk for staying with us all through the night!
