World Champion Ermar 'Alex' Alexander is offering a 2-hour taster session on the sticks (single and double), knife and empty hands techniques of the Filipino Martial Art of Eskrima, particularly the Doce Pares Original Multi Style system which was developed in 1932 by its (12 pairs of) founding Grandmasters in Cebu, Philippines.
Alex, a Cebuano Filipino, will come with an assistant (or two) to your club to demonstrate and explain what Eskrima is about. There is a stereotype that Eskrima is only about sticks, but to the suprise of many, it also includes other weaponry and empty-hand techniques such as the baraw (knife), bangkaw (staff/spear), espada (sword) and sukmag-patid (kicking and punching) and layug-dumog (grappling).
Alex, a 5th degree black belt, has been training since 1999 with Grandmaster Danny Guba (the highest authority for Doce Pares in UK and Europe). He began martial arts at the age of 14 and has tried Tang Soo Do, Praying Mantis traditional kung fu, kung fu kickboxing, Wing Chun, Muay Thai and JKD.
He has also been into sports competition to test his skills. He's a 2x British Tang Soo Do National Champion, and a multiple British, European and 2x World Champion in single and double stick sparring, and in Sayaw (forms or kata/patterns). He is defending his world title in July 2008 in Cebu, Philippines.
Alex is also 2006 Knife Sparring Champion, 2007 AKEA International Champion (point system sparring) and 4x undefeated British Low Armour Champion (where protection is only headgear and gloves). The most recent win was at the Seni Show 2008 KOMBATA Limited Armour Championship where he also won gold.
Rest assured that Alex is one of the most well-rounded eskrimadors in the UK, studying all different sections of eskrima. He has tried and tested his skills and has figured out what really works and what's just there for show.
